Two Americans Arrested For Filming In Gilgil Without Permission

Police in Gilgil are holding two foreigners arrested taking pictures of key installations in the town that is home to hundreds of soldiers. The two women were arrested in the town centre on Wednesday morning after a tip-off from the public. In the wake of the recent terror attacks, the two who were found filming from the top of a building were whisked away for further questioning. Sources said the women had in the past filmed some army barracks, raising suspicion among the public. Trouble started after the two were spotted early in the morning in a building in the town taking pictures without permission.

According to a witness who declined to be named, the two were acting suspiciously and tried to hide their cameras once confronted. "The two had been spotted in a different section of the town taking pictures and their intentions were not clear," said the witness. He added that they decided to call in the police. "We are worried by the goings-on in Mandera and we decided to inform the police who acted fast and arrested the two women," said the witness.

County commissioner Mohammed Birik said the two had been booked in for questioning. "We have two American women in our custody after they were arrested filming parts of Gilgil town in unclear circumstances," he said. Mr Birik added that the two claimed to be working for a charitable organisation, adding that they were making a film about life of the poor in the town. "The two claim that they work with a charitable organisation but we are not taking chances and our officers are keenly following up the cases," he said.
