Jose Mourinho has insisted that Real Madrid and Barcelona can
stroll to the Spanish league title by only trying in "four or five
matches".
The
Chelsea manager won one Liga title and a Copa del Rey in his three years
in charge of Madrid, during which time he took the side to the Champions
League semi-finals three times in a row.
Mourinho,
though, insists it is too easy to win La Liga for the top two teams in Spain,
adding that they might not be able to dominate the English Premier
League in the way they do their own top flight.
"I
was in Spain, but I didn’t enjoy it,” he told talkSPORT.
“I won a
title with a record in Spain with 100 points and 121 goals, but we
only played three or four matches all season.
“I lost
a title with 92 points, but again we played only four or five matches in the
season.
“You
feel the pressure that you have to win every match because if you don’t you
will not be champions. But it is a big, big gap between the giants and the
others.
“In
matches in other countries you can win matches when you are resting. In Spain
and in Italy, I won lots of matches resting. Games in which you can think about
the European game coming up and where you can rest players.
“This
season I rested a few players against Bradford and I lost against Bradford. And
that is English football. You are winning 2-0 and if you concede a goal you
know you are going to have hell for the last few minutes.
“This is
the reality of the Premier League. It’s not just about the number of
matches, it’s the intensity. And it’s not just physical intensity, you feel the
intensity mentally.
“The
difference between the Premier League and La Liga is huge. Would Barcelona
or Real Madrid win the Premier League? Maybe yes. Maybe not."
MY OPINION
Jose Mourinho of course has
the justification to say whatever he wants to say concerning la liga top club
duo because he had coached Real Madrid for three seasons. However, his analysis
of the Spanish league is perceived to be out of envy because he did not enjoy
success as much as he wanted with regards to titles. One la liga title and one
Copa del Rey meant for three years he lost two la liga titles and two Copa Del
Rey titles and his archrival Bacelona won two of each titles within Mourinho’s
tenure. This is a poor performance and he knows. He is saying this out of envy
for Barcelona’s dominance. More so, he left the league unceremoniously. His
club fans and players turned against his style of play and divide and rule
system of coaching governance within the club. This sour relationship was
beginning to tell on Spain’s national team as the team is dominated by
Barcelona and Real Madrid players. The Spanish FA and players of both clubs
raised raised concern at the unfriendly atmosphere Mourinho was creating within
the Spanish national team. It was not good for Spain’s football. So Mourinho
had to be sacrificed for national interest. He had to leave Real Madrid and
Spain.
This did not go down well
with him because he had not accomplished his goal in Spain. The kind of
ambitious results he had in mind when he was coming to Spain was not realized. So
as typical of Mourinho, he dwells on the little achievements had and blows it
beyond proportion to make the world believe he was a huge success in Spain. This
is scheme to trying to shift the attention of his followers from comparing the
magnitude of his boast with his minimal achievements. That he won la liga ones
did not mean he ended Barcelona’s league
dominance which he claims to have done. Be reminded that in his three years at
Los Blancos, Barcelona won the league title twice while he won one. That is to
tell you that Barcelona still dominated the league. He said winning la liga was too easy but he
won only once. Was that easy? Besides, since he had the best team in Spain that season winning la liga with a Spanish record of 100 points and 121 goals, why did he not win the Champions League?
Mourinho said he rested a
few players against Bradford and lost which when he did in Spain he still would
win games. But you may bet to disagree with what I am about to say; the English
Premiership is the most competitive league but on a lower level. The quality of
games in the English Premiership is very poor to the European football standard
and it has shown in recent times in both the Champions League and the Europa
League. The English teams have not performed well in Europe in recent times. This
season they did not even make it to the Semis of the Uefa Champions League
whereas Spanish teams Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid have been
consistent in reaching the semis and the finals of the Uefa Champions League in
five to six years consecutively. At the Europa League, Spanish club Sevilla
have dominated the league and are on the verge of winning the league back to
back this season. I can therefore say that the English Premiership teams are
performing at the level of the Valencia, Almeria, and Villareal of the Spanish
La Liga which Barcelona and Real Madrid beat ‘easily’ according to Mourinho. So
if Barcelona and Real Madrid were to play in the English Premiership they would
be winning the league consistently.
Jose Mourinho in his trying
to be insincere about the Spanish league status unknowingly revealed the truth
in his heart when he made the statement, “Would
Barcelona or Real Madrid win the Premier League? Maybe yes. Maybe
not.". That is to say he recognizes the strong force at which Barcelona
and Real Madrid play with; else, he would have chosen an outright “No”.
