LASUTH Health Workers To Go On Strike!

Office of the Chairman, LASUTH Board
Comrade R.A. Bamishe, the Union Chairman of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Health Workers led his members to a resolution of an industrial action today. This decision is based on the Ministry of Health and LASUTH Management's supposed slow response to their demands. Chief of the health workers demands is the immediate full implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Scheme (CONHESS).

After a brief congress, the health workers were led to the MRC Building which seats the Chairman, LASUTH Board and the Chief Medical Director, singing songs of solidarity. The Chairman, LASUTH Board, Dr. F.O. Williams addressed the health workers to keep their cool and be patient as both the Management of LASUTH and the Ministry of Health are working towards a meaningful end. He also pleaded with the workers to consider the lives of the sick patients in the wards.

However, all his pleas fell on deaf ears as the health workers felt they were to slow or rather reluctant in responding to their demands. The Union Chairman argued that the health workers have been patient enough since year 2011 when some of these demands have been made. He also said it was quite unfortunate for the patients who are currently admitted in the hospital who will feel the pains of this industrial action. He wished them quick recovery but that what has to be done has to be done. "This action is in the interested of both the staff and the patients", he added.

The Health workers also decided to boycott their promotional examinations scheduled for 28th of March, 2014 in favour of demanding for their right. The health workers have therefore decided to commence the strike on the 24th of March, 2014. Union Executives  were subsequently summoned for a meeting with the Commissioner for Health at Alausa, Ikeja.
