We Are Treated Like Slaves, Chinese Construction Company Workers Cry Out

Nigerian workers of China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) at the ongoing N29 billion Ikorodu Road reconstruction project, yesterday, protested alleged anti-labour practices by the company and unwillingness of the company to pay disengaged employees their entitlements.

The aggrieved workers, who carried placards, chanted protest songs in front of the CCECC office at Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos, as early as 10:00 am, yesterday.

“CCECC stop cheating us, pay us our pay-offs,” “CCECC, we are not slaves, pay us,” and “We need our pay-off, it is our right,” read some of the placards.

According to Vanguard, one of the affected workers, Thaddus Akaa, said the protest was to seek their due compensations from CCECC, stressing that workers had been tolerating the alleged abuse because of fear of being sacked.

The Ayinke House – a maternity cllinic – has been shut down for renovation that has taken many years now. Why is that?

Ayinke House served pregnant women within and outside Lagos; but structural evaluation of the building some years ago showed that it was about to collapse. We closed it down and provided alternative maternal centres because the state government wanted to do a complete overhaul, which has taken a lot of investment and time.

Now, it is ready. The new Ayinke House has 139 beds, though the old one had 150 beds. You will say we are short of 11 beds, but the new ward is a lot more modern, with world-class equipment installed by international partners to provide safe and standard gynaecology and obstetrics care. It will be reopened before the end of the Babatunde Raji Fashola tenure.

Falling oil prices have put Nigeria’s economy at risk, with revenues falling and the government having to cut spending so as to be able to fund the 2015 budget.

The economic state of the country is affecting the health of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi okonjo-Iweala, who disclosed, Tuesday, that the task of managing the nation’s economy has given her a high blood pressure.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala is, however, not the only government official the current state of the economy has affected; the Minister of State, Amb. Bashir Yuguda , the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Anastasia Daniel-Nwaobia and about 70 per cent of the ministry’s staff  have also developed High Blood Pressure.

“70 per cent of my staff have high blood pressure. This goes to show the amount of stress we go through. All three of us here (referring to herself, Amb. Yuguda and the Perm. Sec.) have high blood pressure,” the minister said while commissioning a new clinic and a crèche at the Finance ministry in Abuja.

Buhari Pleads With Nigerians To Be Patient, Says Expectation Is Too High

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari says he does not know how to tell Nigerians that he will not be able to turn the economy around quickly as promised.

“The expectation is too high and I have started nervously to explain to people that Rome was not built in a day. For this to be corrected, please, give the incoming government a chance,” said Buhari when governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) paid him a congratulatory visit on Tuesday. He noted that the outgoing government has battered the economy so much it will be hard to hit the ground running.

“Here, I will like to recall what happened during the Abacha regime which led to the emergence of PTF. The Abacha regime was a military regime and it thought that the only way was to increase the prices of petroleum products. But they were not taking Nigerians for a ride. They would have said that if Nigerians decide to riot, they have the guns and so they can have their way.

“They decided to tell Nigerians that they were going to increase prices of petroleum products and the money we get, we will put aside for development. That was how PTF came.

APC Governors Submit Ministerial List To Buhari

With just about three weeks remaining for him to be sworn in as Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has started putting his cabinet together.

In view of this, the president-elect has reportedly directed governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to forward three names each of their ministerial nominees.

Vanguard learnt that while giving the directive, Buhari said only those who are technically competent and of proven integrity, as well as loyal to the party could be elected.

Buhari, it was learnt, told the governors that once they sent three names each, he reserved the right to choose anyone he thinks was best from the submitted names.
